The only detraction for me was that the cheat buttons have been switched to the D-pad, making them harder to access. It will probably divide fans of the previous system, but after a couple of sessions I was firmly in the ‘love it’ camp. It’s an easy system to adopt, intuitive for the newcomer but with nuance for the serious gamer who wants total mastery of their character. There are many gradations between, however, and the angle of the punch is dictated by precisely which degree of the circle is aimed at. Three or nine gives a standard hook, and five or seven corresponds to an uppercut. Think if it as a clock face - aiming for 11 or one will have you snapping out a straight jab. This is no more, alas in its place is full spectrum punch control. I've always loved the total punch control system for Fight Night - flicking the right analogue stick out for a jab then jamming it out wide and circling up for a roundhouse hook was immensely satisfying. Legacy mode, and particularly online play, is where most gamers will spend their time, and it's here where the new control system will make or break the game for you.
